Atrial fibrillation is an arrhythmia typical of elderly people. According to epidemiological researches, the prevalence of this arrhythmia progressively increases with age. It ranges between 0.5% in the 50-59 years decade and 8.8% in the 80-89 years decade. It follows that the incidence of Atrial Fibrillation significantly increases with age.
Average age: 75 years
Sex: given the same age, men are more likely than women to suffer from Atrial Fibrillation.

Diffusion in Italy and in the U.S.A.
Atrial Fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia. But how many people suffer from it?
In Italy, Atrial Fibrillation affects at least 600.000 people (that meaning 1 out of 100 Italians), with approximately120,000 new cases per year.

Figures as impressive as these should raise further attention towards this still largely underestimated pathology. It must be also noticed that these figures refer only to confirmed cases: in fact, many people suffering from Atrial Fibrillation don't show any symptoms at all.
