alfa_logoThe primary aim of ALFA - ALiance to Fight Atrial fibrillation - is that of addressing physicians and social and health professionals, in order to gain their support and contribution in improving information and treatment of this widespread arrhythmia.

Estimates are quite clear: in Italy, Atrial Fibrillation affects at least 600,000 people (that meaning 1 out of 100 Italians), with approximately 120,000 new cases per year. In the USA, there are about 3,000,000 people affected by Atrial Fibrillation and between 300,000 and 600,000 new cases every year. It must be noticed that these figures refer only to confirmed cases, and that they could be significantly affected either by the progressive, overall ageing of the population or by the fact that many people suffering from Atrial Fibrillation don't show any symptoms: if we were to count these, too, the above mentioned figures would probably double.

This large-scale phenomenon has not only social but also economic consequences: in Italy, the average cost for every single patient per year burdens the state treasury with about 3,200 euro, with the effect of sending the total national expenditure up to nearly 3 billion and 300 million euro per year; in the USA, the average cost for every single patient per year reaches 20,700 dollars, with a total national expenditure of about 6 billion dollars per year.

Therefore, an in-depth awareness of the consequences of this arrhythmia - by both the patients and the physicians - would undoubtedly favour its prevention, management and treatment, with remarkably positive effects on the common well-being - and on every single national Health System, too.
